Arrivals, Departures and Airlines at Dallas Love Field Airport

History of Dallas Love Field Airport

Dallas Love Field has its origin in 1917 when it was named after Moss L. Love, who died in a military plane crash a few years earlier in 1913. He was a member of the U.S. Army.

When the United States entered into World War I, the airfield was one of thirty-two new US Army Air Service fields used for flight training.

Love Field was deactivated as an active-duty airfield after the end of the war in 1918. It was converted into an aircraft storage facility shortly.

In 1928, the city of Dallas purchased the airfield. Four years later, the first paved runways were completed. In 1939 it had at least 20 daily airline departures. In 1943, two runways were added.

The airport saw rapid airline activities in 1957 with more than 50-weekday departures and nonstop flights to Washington DC, New York, Chicago, California, and Mexico City, among others.

On November 22, 1963, United States President John F. Kennedy arrived at Love Field on Air Force One. He was assassinated shortly while his motorcade was traveling from the airport to the Dallas Trade Mart.

Modernization of the airport began shortly after the tragedy in 1963. In 1964, the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), gave Dallas and Fort Worth six months to plan a new regional airport. Four years later, they finalized an agreement to build Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Airport (now Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport).

In early 2009, a plan to modernize Love Field was announced with a master plan to replace the terminals with a new 20-gate concourse and expanded baggage facilities with a people mover system to connect the airport to Dallas Area Rapid Transit's Inwood Station.

Today, Dallas Love Field has a single terminal with 20 gates. Southwest uses 18 of 20 gates, with Alaska Airlines leasing the remaining two. There are no lounge facilities at Dallas Love Field.

The busiest domestic routes from DAL in 2020 include Denver, Colorado, Houston–Hobby, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia, Phoenix–Sky Harbor, Arizona, Las Vegas, Nevada, Chicago-Midway, Illinois, Orlando, Florida, Los Angeles, California, San Antonio, Texas, and Nashville, Tennessee.

The airport covers an area of 1,300 acres with annual passenger traffic of nearly 8 million in 2020.

Dallas Love Field Airport sits 148 meters above sea level at 32°50′50″N and 96°51′06″W.
